Animal Surgery Technician / Associate Scientist, Surgical Services

Would you like to work for a premier provider of innovative solutions in drug discovery and development? Ricerca Biosciences has an exciting opportunity for Surgery Technicians at our Bothell, WA location.

In this full-time position, the Associate Scientist - Surgery technician will be responsible for assisting in the execution of project/contract related experimental work for new drug discovery and development in support of Efficacy studies. The successful candidate will have animal handling experience relevant to in-life experimentation and the ability to follow laboratory protocols and perform procedures under supervision from their immediate supervisor and/or other laboratory staff. For consideration for an advanced level position, the candidate will have the ability to adapt to new experimental protocols from the literature, perform routine procedures independently with accuracy and precision, and will need to be able to troubleshoot processes.

As a member of this team you will have the opportunity to maintain, organize, present, and discuss data with your supervisor and internal study groups. If qualified for an advanced level position, you will assist in the preparation of written reports for clients.

A Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences and/or LAT/LVT certification plus relevant experience desired. Advanced level positions desire a Master’s degree in the life sciences or a Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences and/or LAT/LVT certification plus 2-3 year relative experience. Equivalent education and experience will also be considered. Experience in data entry/analysis and scientific literature reading comprehension skills desired. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, stand for prolong periods of time and the ability and willingness to work some weekends, evenings and/or holidays with advance notice.

Position: Animal Research Operations Manager

Position Description: Manages and directs the technical operations of Medtronic Physiologic Research Laboratories (PRL) surgical departments while providing leadership and organizational expertise. Manages and provides oversight of daily surgical operations and supervisory staff, ensuring coordination of multiple teams. Continuous assessment of daily operations, and implementation of process improvements to attain and maintain operational excellence. Facilitates problem resolution and sustaining communication within PRL and with Medtronic sponsors/scientists. An integral member of the facility's management team, reporting to the manager of Medical/Surgical Services.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Understand and be committed to the Medtronic Mission and PRL Vision and Values.
  • Management and supervision of all surgery support staff including supervisors, bio-engineers, imaging personnel and scheduling in their daily assignments. Provide guidance and motivation to staff members.
  • Continuously review, recommend and implement process improvements in daily work flow to assure timely delivery of quality service to customers.
  • Provide technical guidance to surgery operations teams and oversee daily operation of surgical operations.
  • Maintain strong links of communication throughout the surgical support team, Research Operations, cross departmentally within PRL and with Medtronic research personnel .
  • Assist in the development of and achievement of department goals and financial objectives.
  • Participate in the overall operations of the department. Provide support of department's daily operations to meet schedules and to resolve complex issues.
  • Routinely oversee workload adjustments to accommodate changes in business needs and staffing availability.
  • Manage employee performance and conduct annual performance reviews. Determine individual development opportunities, promotional opportunities, and salary increases. Provide employee guidance regarding professional and career development.
  • Interview and hire new employees. Provide training, coaching, and mentoring for staff as needed.
  • Develop, implement, document, and maintain procedures and policies. Work to standardize and improve the quality and efficiency of surgical and in-life events and procedures.
  • Oversee team compliance to GLP, FDA, USDA, AAALAC, IACUC, and all other applicable regulations/guidelines. Ensure employee adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, department guidelines, safety policies, study protocols, and proper documentation.
  • Responsible for department equipment maintenance, repair, and purchases. Ensure required resources (facilities, equipment, personnel, supplies, etc.) are available proactively and maintained to meet demands.
  • Serve as a resource in providing technical expertise in trouble-shooting, problem-solving, investigational methods and other tasks relating to non-clinical research projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years experience working as a Veterinary or Medical Technician or related field.
  • 3+ years supervisory or management experience.
  • General knowledge of GLP, USDA, FDA regulations.
  • Demonstrated team leadership abilities including an ability to attract, develop and retain top/diverse talent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Strong computer skills (for example but not all required, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Internet, Documentum, DMS)
  • Ability to implement changes to department processes and procedures, foster team development, and build strong partnerships across all functions.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possess an understanding of animal use in a research environment.
  • Experience working in animal husbandry.
  • AALAS certification at ALAT, LAT or LATG level is preferred.
  • Knowledge of research animal physiology, pharmacology, surgery, anatomy, anesthesia, medical terminology, and general care.
  • Working knowledge of GLP, USDA, FDA, AAALAC, IACUC, and all other applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Possess good judgment, decision making, and problem solving skills.
  • Professional, goal oriented, self-motivated, and responsible.
  • Good organizational skills with an attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, tact, courtesy, and patience in dealing with team members.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of department SOPs/Policies/Guidelines.

ANIMAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - SUPERVISORY

Duties
  • Perform and supervise animal husbandry, routine examinations, and clinical treatments
  • Perform and supervise routine animal research procedures (e.g. anesthesia, surgery support, study treatments, necropsy, tissue collection)
  • Perform advanced research procedures as qualified (e.g. animal surgery, biomechanical testing, in vitro assays, histotechnology, protocol/report writing)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable animal care and use laws, regulations, and company policies and standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • Prepare routine procedure guidelines (e.g. SOPs) and provide related training
  • Manage facility, grounds and equipment maintenance, and supply inventory
Requirements
  • 2 or 4 year college degree in veterinary technology or applicable science
    or advanced certification in laboratory animal technology or surgical research
  • Hands-on animal care experience with rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, or other similar species – farm background desirable
  • Two or more years of experience in veterinary assisting or animal research
  • Two or more years of supervisory responsibilities in a diverse work environment
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills (e.g. MS Word/Excel)
  • Physical ability to perform all routine animal care and use duties
  • Clean pre-hire criminal background check and drug test
